For nearly half a century the Australia Council has invested in artists and arts organisations at all stages of the creative process and at critical moments in their careers. The Australia Council undertakes strategic development work to raise the profile of Australian arts and to develop new markets and audiences for our artists across Australia and around the globe, as well as partnering with philanthropists and the private sector to support the growth and health of Australia’s artistic and cultural ambitions.

As the current CEO term concludes in October 2018, the opportunity is now available for a dynamic CEO to champion and lead the organisation. The likely appointee will have led a significant organisation in the past, be of the arts if not from the arts, and be a credible and convincing advocate with government, employees, stakeholders, arts organisations and the broader national and international arts community.

Ideally, applicants will meet the following criteria:-

  • Outstanding and proven leadership capabilities
  • Demonstrated strategic and operational excellence
  • Superior negotiation and persuasion skills
  • Creates true stakeholder partnerships
  • High level cognitive thinking coupled with self-awareness
  • Sound background in the arts in Australia Articulate written and spoken English
  • Thorough experience working with multiple layers of Government
  • A commitment to and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture

The CEO has a senior executive team of 5 and reports to the Chair of the Council. A national organisation based in the Surry Hills offices in Sydney, the role is a maximum term appointment of five years. A salary commensurate with experience and in line with the Remuneration Tribunal’s Principal Executive Officer Structure is offered.
